Joseph E. Ransdell papers, 1898-1951.

The Joseph E. Ransdell Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, and scrapbooks documenting his work in Congress on flood control, public health, the merchant marine, and the League of Nations; his activities as a prominent Catholic layman; and his other personal affairs. Papers on Ransdell's work in Congress for public health concern his efforts on behalf of the National Leprosarium at Carville, La., the National Institute of Health, the Conference Board of the National Institute of Health, and the National Health Foundation between 1929 and 1933. Scrapbooks of newspaper clippings document his political career between 1916 and 1930. Volume 5 (1924-1929) contains reprints of speeches, broadsides, pamphlets, letters, and typewritten diary entries. These diary entries describe conditions during the Mississippi River flood of 1927 and Ransdell's tour of the flooded district with a Congressional party. Letters from Catholic clergy and friends congratulate Ransdell on being made a Knight of St. Gregory the Great (1937-1938). Correspondence with his biographer, Adras P. La Borde, and friends record incidents from his personal life and political career for use in his biography, "A National Southerner: Ransdell of Louisiana" (1946-1948). Also included are a photograph of Ransdell taken in 1924 and ten taken in 1951.
